Charlotte Mason on Books

"One more thing is of vital importance; children must have books, living books, the best books; the best are not too good for them; anything less than the best is not good enough; and if it is needful to exercise economy, let go everything that belongs to soft and luxurious living before letting go the duty of supplying the books, and the frequent changes of books, which are necessary for the constant stimulation of the child's intellectual life."  (p.279)

~Charlotte Mason, Parents and Children

See honey, my obsession with books (and therefore need for more bookcases) is TOTALLY LEGIT.  Charlotte Mason SAID SO.

This may be my favorite Mason quote yet.

Tee-hee.

  1. Literally two days ago I listened to this quote read by a father who spoke at the recent LER. I listened on the recommendation of our own Joy, who has written a bit about that in her most recent blog post (https://embracingthefullnessoflife.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/balance-ii-faithfully-obedient/comment-page-1/#comment-57) and it was excellent. Perhaps my favorite part, though, was when he quoted this lovely quote and turned it into an endorsement to throw all else to the wind for the sake of buying books. As if we needed this excuse, right? :)

  2. Nope, I didn't need an excuse. :P But now I've got ammunition when Dan ribs me about my Habit. :P I saw that Joy had written about that - I will have to give it a listen.
