I think some distinction between doctrine (especially in a very detailed, theological sense) and the Bible could be made, though the Bible is certainly necessary to inform our doctrine. There is a difference between the Bible and a systematic theology book. :) I definitely agree that the Bible can (and should!) inspire our imagination. It recently struck me that the Bible is at least half *story*. I'm hoping that Smith becomes more compelling now that we've finally reached the chapter he keeps telling us we're heading towards....Emilyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00402979699408650363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-692264042634562455.post-2623114002059587982014-03-12T09:58:09.506-04:002014-03-12T09:58:09.506-04:00Yes, I think you've hit it on the head. I remember being slightly bothered by that at the beginning of the book too, but wanted to withhold judgment until I had a better idea of where he was really going in the book. Now I think Smith and I will just have to agree to disagree on this point. Ideas can be living too (and inform and animate our practices - as you say all of it works together!) I seem to remember saying something about it in an early post) He said something about ideas not being enough, and I wrote (in pencil) ask over the library copy things like, "what about CM?", "What does this mean 're: living ideas?" "Is he right?" "Can ideas really affect our actions?" "Do they not affect as much as I thought?"<br /><br />And my conclusion was that of course CM was right (how could I have doubted?) because ideas can be living and are food for the mind. And the reason that they can be so is because Jesus is the WORD made flesh. He embodies God's word. Isn't it amazing to think how He brings it all together?! The mind and the heart and the body all work together and cooperate and interact with each other. Trinity! Made in the image of God! <br /><br />I see how Mr. Smith feels a need to emphasize this, but as I think we've all agreed, he just goes too far. Apparently the advice to "act, don't react" hasn't been taken to heart yet by Mr. Smith ;)Lisa Ahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04496990920896461103noreply@blogger.com
